In the 1890s, two successful cotton firms in the neighboring town of Davidson got into a disagreement about the weighing of cotton. Executives named an official “cotton weigher” between the two, and one firm rejected the appointment and moved to what is now Cornelius. Heavy rains and mud made the road from Davidson to the cotton buyer nearly impossible to travel upon. The cotton firm called upon J.B. Cornelius, who funded the construction of a more accessible cotton mill, and the town was hence named after him. Almost 100 years later, Duke Energy dammed the Catawba River to create Lake Norman, making Cornelius a lakeside community with 70 miles of waterfront property.
